Mission

The Capital Teaching Residency trains new teachers to maximize their impact inside early childhood, elementary, middle and high school classrooms at 91³Ô¹ÏÍø Public Schools.

With a full year of learning under a mentor teacher, unparalleled professional development, and a commitment to educational equity, the Capital Teaching Residency provides an alternative and accessible pathway to teaching careers. We are looking for residents who will have a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution by June 2025, all majors and career changers accepted!

Additional Benefits

Residents earn $52,000 during the first year with a pathway to roles in the second year with competitive pay including senior resident ($57,200) and lead teacher at 91³Ô¹ÏÍø (starts at $65,500). 91³Ô¹ÏÍø’s benefits package includes medical, dental, vision, voluntary and employer-paid benefits, including a 403(b) retirement account.

In addition to a competitive salary, 91³Ô¹ÏÍø also covers Resident teacher licensure costs, which are approximately $4,500.

 

Capital Teaching Residency Positions

  • Primary Residents

    • A one-year residency placement in an early childhood or elementary classroom with a mentor teacher and earn teaching licensure for PreK3-4th grade.
    • Residents spend the first year of this commitment – their residency year – training in an anchor classroom with a highly effective lead teacher to develop teaching skills and confidence. Residents will also have the opportunity to independently apply new skills and abilities in other grades and subjects within their school communities. This dual approach allows residents to learn alongside a mentor teacher, strengthen skills, and apply new learnings within their school community.
    • Through our gradual release model, residents are set up for success by becoming an integral part of their school community and gaining more responsibility in their classroom over time.
    • After the residency year, residents interview for senior resident or lead teacher at roles at 91³Ô¹ÏÍø or lead teacher roles at partner public charter schools to complete their three-year commitment.
    • Ideal primary resident candidates have an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher.

     

  • Secondary Residents

    • A one-year residency placement in a middle or high school classroom (5th through 12th grades) with a mentor teacher and earn teaching licensure for 7th-12th grade.
    • Residents spend the first year of this commitment – their residency year – training in an anchor classroom with a highly effective lead teacher to develop teaching skills and confidence. Residents will also have the opportunity to independently apply new skills and abilities in other grades and subjects within their school communities. This dual approach allows residents to learn alongside a mentor teacher, strengthen skills, and apply new learnings within their school community.
    • Through the gradual release model, residents are set up for success by becoming an integral part of their school community and gaining more responsibility in their classroom over time.

Application Process Details

Online Application: Our application is quick! An upload of your resume, unofficial undergraduate transcript, and a few short answer questions. We encourage applicants to apply early as we fill most of our resident positions in the winter and early spring.

Initial Interview: We’ll connect with you via a 45-minute phone interview to learn more about you.

Performance Task: You’ll complete a performance task and references ahead of the final interview stage.

Final Interview: As the final step in the process, you’ll have the opportunity to interview with our school leaders.

  • What is the commitment as a Capital Teaching Resident?

    As a resident, you will commit to growing your craft as a teacher for three years. Year one as a resident learning under a mentor, and years two and three as a senior resident or lead teacher at 91³Ô¹ÏÍø or one of our partner public charter schools.

     

  • Who should apply for the Capital Teaching Residency?

    We are looking for residents who will have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution by June 2025, all majors accepted. This residency is for candidates without teaching experience or licensure in DC. Promising applicants are committed to our mission, work well with others, and have a growth mindset.

  • There are KIPP schools across the country, do I need to complete my three year commitment in DC?

    By joining the Capital Teaching Residency, you are committing to teaching for three years in Washington, DC. In their first year, all residents will work and train in a 91³Ô¹ÏÍø school. In their second and third year, residents can become teachers at 91³Ô¹ÏÍø or one of our partner public charter schools in DC.

     

  • Are applicants required to have past experience working with students or studying education?

    We accept applicants from a wide range of past experiences and educational backgrounds. While we do not require previous experience working with students or studying education, experience working with students in some capacity is preferred. Volunteer and informal experiences are welcome. We are looking for applicants who are committed to growing, learning, and providing high quality education to our students.

     

  • Does the program train residents in all grades and subject levels?

    Yes. Each year, approximately two-thirds of residents are placed as primary residents. Primary residents are placed in classrooms with students from pre-kindergarten through 4th grade in general elementary. The final third are secondary residents in middle and high school classrooms (5th through 12th grades) who train in ELA or mathematics.

     

  • Do I get to choose what grade level or subject I am placed in?

    We encourage you to apply to the resident application that most aligns with your grade level preference. Primary residents work in grades PreK3-4th grade and secondary residents work in grades 5th-12th. Through our interview process you will get to interview directly with schools.

     

  • There are several deadlines listed on your website, when should I apply?

    While we accept applications on a rolling basis, we encourage all applicants to apply to the earliest possible deadline. We are actively filling our resident positions through the year.
